CHAPTER 11

Evelyn followed Christian onto the stairs, with Tim and Hugh walking sombrely behind. The midday sun shone brightly outside the large hangar, the long grass of the adjacent field visibly whipping around in the wind.

At the bottom of the stairs was half a dozen men dressed in black clothes along with two men in grey suits. “Christian,” said one of the two men as they got close. “You made it.”

“We’re finally so close,” said Christian as they shook hands in a peculiar way.

Secret handshake, thought Evelyn to herself. It was funny how something that a group of primary school children might do was also what secret societies do. Like children playing games, she thought to herself.

“They’re moving in faster than expected,” said the man in grey.

“They know we’ve got the final piece,” said Christian as they walked towards a pair of black SUVs. “We’ll need to be prepared for a full assault.”

Evelyn, Tim, and Hugh walked slowly behind the men. “All right, I’m going!” said Hugh behind her, his slow pace raising the ire of one of the accompanying men in black.

“Maybe we should have hidden the stone on the way,” whispered Evelyn to Tim.

“If what’s been said about astral projection is true, they would have found it no matter where we had put it,” whispered Tim. “From what he said just now, it’s likely the other faction is aware of what’s happening and is moving in.”

“If we’re in their capital of Illuminati territory, how far away are the other side?” whispered Hugh. Whilst Evelyn agreed with Hugh, something about their conversation with Christian kept playing through her head.

What if Tim’s right, she thought. What if what Christian’s doing is the only way to save humanity?

They approached the SUVs and were guided into the back seat of the second SUV while Christian and the men in grey suits climbed into the one in front.

The new car smell filled Evelyn’s nostrils as she sat into the soft black leather. Two of the guards dressed in black got into the front seat, the scent of stale cigarette smoke filling the interior of the car as the doors closed them all in.

She hated that smell at the best of times, but in a full car on a hot day, it was almost unbearable.

“What is it with these guys and black?” asked Hugh. “Do they buy in bulk for a discount?”

“You don’t like black?” came a voice with a heavy accent from the man in driver’s seat.

“It’s just that you’re clothes are black, your shoes are black, and your cars are black,” said Hugh. “Don’t you get tired of black?”

“Don’t you get tired of talking?” retorted the man as he scratched his goatee, not bothering to look back.

“I’m not tired,” said Hugh. “I am hungry. Any chance we could get something to eat on the way?”

The man glared at Hugh through the rearview mirror as he started the car. If looks could kill, Evelyn thought to herself.

“Where are you taking us?” asked Tim.

The man chuckled to himself.
